Preakness Celebration, Inc. is a 501 © (3) organization established in 1988 to produce a series of events in and around Baltimore to celebrate horse racing’s famed Triple Crown thoroughbred race, the Preakness Stakes. It is a separate entity from the Maryland Jockey Club, which hosts the second jewel of horse racing’s Visa Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course on the third Saturday of May. Preakness Celebration stages a series of events, including hot air balloon ascensions and glows, block parties, the Westside Preakness Parade, the Preakness 5-K Run at Pimlico and other special festivities. Most of the events are free and open to the public.
Preakness Celebration has become a tradition for people of all ages since its inception in 1988. The week-long series of special events celebrates the annual running of the Preakness Stakes, Baltimore's "Super Bowl" and the 2nd jewel in thoroughbred racing's prestigious Triple Crown.
Maryland Preakness Celebration, Inc. is funded in part from a grant given by the State of Maryland, Department of Business and Economic Development and a grant awarded through the City of Baltimore.
Throughout its 18-year history, Preakness Celebration has accomplished its mission "to create and promote a unique series of fun and diverse events that enhances the Preakness, engages the community, entertains residents & visitors alike, and generates positive economic impact to the City, region and State." The nonprofit organization also supports various area charities each year, including the Disabled Jockeys Fund and the South Baltimore Station.
