The Open Championship (sometimes referred to as the British Open to distinguish it from other national opens), is the oldest of the four major championships in men's golf. Each year the event is hosted by one of several prestigious golf clubs in Britain; however, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) administers The Open regardless of its site. It is always played on a links course.The Open Championship is played in July, and is the third major to take place each year, after The Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open, but before the PGA Championship. It has been an official event on the PGA TOUR since 1995, which means that the prize money won in the Open by PGA Tour members is included on the official money list. In addition, all Open Championships before that date have been retrospectively classified as PGA Tour wins, and the list of leading winners on the PGA Tour has been adjusted to reflect this. The PGA European Tour has always recognized The Open as an official event.
Pádraig Harrington winner 2007
On July 22nd 2007 Harrington became the first Irishman to win The Open Championship in 60 years, when he defeated Sergio García in a four hole playoff at Carnoustie. Both players went into the play off having shot a 7 under 277 for the championship, and Harrington went on to win the playoff by one shot. Upon seeing the Claret Jug, Harrington's son Patrick was famously captured on camera saying "Can we fill it with ladybirds?".

The course is at the southern edge of Southport in Lancashire. The Open has been played eight times at Royal Birkdale since it was added to the list of championship courses in 1954. That year Peter Thomson won the first of three Opens in succession, returning in 1965 to add his fifth and final title. Arnold Palmer's victory in 1961 is recognised as the turning point in the fortunes of The Open, giving new life and international impact to the Championship.
