135th Kentucky Derby

The 2009 Kentucky Derby will be the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby. This event race will take place on May 2, 2009, and will be televised in the United States on the NBC television network.

This year 401 thoroughbred horses received early nomination to the eligibility list for the Triple Crown races, much less than the 449 in 2008 and 450 in 2007 and early favorites include Old Fashioned, Friesan Fire, Haynesfield, Pioneerof the Nile, and Flying Pegasus, while the filly Stardom Bound may have excited the most interest.

The Churchill Downs has scheduled their first futures wager pool for the year to begin on February 12, with two subsequent pools opening on March 12 and April 2. Offering 24 betting options, divided in 23 individual horses at odds ranging from 10-1 to 50-1, and an "All others" option at 5-2 odds.

For this time, favorites include Capt. Candyman Can and Old Fashioned at 10-1, followed by Friesan Fire, Midshipman, Pioneerof the Nile, Stardom Bound, This Ones for Phil, and Vineyard Haven at 12-1.

157,770 people were the attendance this time and the second largest in Derby history. Post time was 6:15 p.m. EDT and was televised in the United States on the NBC television network.

Big Brown won the race by nearly 5 lengths. Eight Belles took the second place and was the first filly to run the Derby in nine years. Also it’s believed to be the first fatality in Kentucky Derby history because was euthanized following the end of the race after fracturing both front ankles while galloping out.
