North Carolina TAR HEELS 2005 Champions, March / 4 / 2005

Sean May's 21st birthday celebration gave North Carolina the motivation it needed to gut out the National Title. May was dominant and scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half. Coach Roy Williams won his first title as his North Carolina Tar Heels withstood a furious rally by Illinois for the 75-70 victory.

This was North Carolina's fourth NCAA championship and first in 12 years.

May made 10 of 11 shots and overpowered a smaller Illinois team to cap of one of the best performances in NCAA Tournament history. North Carolina's substantial perimeter based offense which uses a three guard attack was dominant again demonstrating why this team lost only one this season.

Even with May's stellar play, the Fighting Illini (37-2) charged back from a 15-point second-half deficit, firing away with 3 - point shots. Shooting 12 for 40 from beyond the arc, helped Illinois set a new championship record for 3 pointers in the final game.

The great season Illinois put together ended with the disappointing defeat. Illinois was again denied their first championship in school history who have won 37 NCAA Tournament games, the most of any school without a title.
