The Good St. Leger Festival by MK

One of the most prestigious world class venues, the St. Leger Festival at the Doncaster Racecourse holds one of the most proud heritages in the horseracing history, two important races are held during the year on September; The Doncaster Cup and the St. Leger Stakes.

As one of the top class racings, this event has become one of the most popular social festivities in the city of Yorkshire. It's not only the racecourse but also an entertaining activity. This festival last four days and finish with a live musical entertainment. Named after an officer and important politician resident of Doncaster; the St. Leger Stakes is a tradition in the South Yorkshire, England that cannot be ignored.

Some interesting details about this race; the Doncaster is one of the oldest racecourses and largest centers for horse racing dated since the 16th century. The oldest course is the Doncaster Cup; the first run was on 1766 and originally was held in Cantley Common and was called Doncaster Gold Cup. It move 10 years later to the present location in Town Moor. At the beginning, the race was contested over 4 miles, but the distance has changed at least five times until the current format. The course was classed as a Group 3 Level, but in 2003 was promoted to Group 2. It is one of the most important events held in Britain for horses which specialize in long distances.

The St. Leger Stakes was created ten years later, and has become the main attraction at the Doncaster Racecourse. Before bearing the actual name, the race was called "A Sweepstake of 25 Guineas". The race it's a Group 1 flat horse race and the event goes for fourth days on September. Starting on Wednesday 7th through Saturday 10th, 2011.

The festival begins with the St. Leger Opening Day; people gathers and party in a very similar way to the Kentucky Derby at the Champagne Pavillion. The festivities continue on Thursday 8th with the Ladies Day; an afternoon with tea and girls with impressive dresses. I still don't know what it has to do with horseracing, but it's like some kind of tradition to honor the ladies. Friday 9th is the Doncaster Cup Day; a Group 2 flat horse race action at last, and finish on Saturday 10th with the main event, the Ladbrokes ST. Leger Day is the Group 1 flat horse race everyone is expecting.
